‘Because it can be a matter of life or death’ (Sevice user, 2011)
Shilhay Community is a registered Charity providing accommodation, health and wellbeing support, education, training, employment and social opportunities to people who are homeless or vulnerably housed in Exeter and East Devon. The charity supports an average of 350 people per year who are so often marginalised and ignored by society.
Predominantly, we work with adults aged 18 or above; the majority of our clients being single male but we do also support women and couples. We are proud to offer a service that does not discriminate on background...
We help people to take better control and improve the quality of their lives by providing someone to listen and talk to, a safe environment that they can call home, opportunities to grow, professional guidance, direction and signposting to other services where we cannot provide. We have a Street Homeless Outreach Team (SHOT), supported housing over 5 properties in Exeter (providing 73 bed spaces), including Exeter's primary resettlement project for homeless men and couples and an Education, Training and Employment (ETE) service.
In 2011 we suffered a huge funding cut of £264,000 and anticipate further cuts this year. We need all the support and donations you can offer to be able to minimise the impact this has on continuing to reach people and reduce homelessness locally. Whilst funding for services is being cut, the need is actually growing and we are working even harder to engage with as many people as we can. We simply have to stretch our resources as much as possible, continuously improving our work with partners, emergency services and key stakeholders, if we are to continue making real progress towards our long term vision of no-one having to sleep rough.
We exist with the support of staff, funders, partners and those willing to give up their time to help others. Without this, we would not be able to be there for someone to turn to when they need help.
Homelessness can happen to anyone!
Who would you go to if it happened to you?
